The best and easiest way is using FTP Program. You need some FTP Client such Transmit, FireFTP or something that suitable on you.

The Most important back up files is

  • wp-config.php
  • .htaccess
  • robot.txt
  • sitemap.xml
  • wp-content

For robot.txt and sitemap.xml not each WordPress have it. So back up if you have it. The Most important is wp-config.php and wp-content folder. Another files you can get it on WordPress.org. To started back up all need to do, Login into your server using FTP Client and began downloading all listed files and folder above.

Another solution is Create Synchs With Your WordPress Site using WinSCP and other programs allow you to synchronize with your website to keep a mirror copy of the content on your server and hard drive updated. It saves time and makes sure you have the latest files in both places. Sometimes FTP Client such as Transmit support this featured too.

How To synchronize your WordPress files in WinScp

Log in to your ftp server normally using WinScp.
Press the “Synchronize” button.

So, the best time is back up it each weeks or less.
